A Graduate Certificate in Career Development will be conferred upon successful completion of the four subjects.  This course provides the foundation study for the Graduate Diploma in Career Development.

The Graduate Certificate in Career Development is delivered online via integrated learning modules.

Upon successful completion of each Unit you receive a Certificate of Attainment and successful completion of all 4 Units (12 credit points) results in the award of a Graduate Certificate in Career Development from Swinburne University.

Career Support and Intervention

The course provides a thorough background to the theory and assumptions of career choice and development and the requisite counselling and helping skills underlying career development interventions. The content of the four subjects in the Graduate Certificate is the same regardless of which Study Stream you intend to select in the Graduate Diploma.

1. HAYD401 Labour Markets and Career Development Theory

This unit of study equips students with the knowledge and skills required to understand and articulate the changes that have taken place in the labour market and to identify and utilise appropriate career counselling theory in clinical practice.

Generic Skills Outcome/Graduate Attributes:

  • Diagnose how the environment where a person works affects their appraisal of their career situation.
  • Interpret the radical changes taking place in the way work is being organised by employers and the effects on the human resources they employ to carry it out.
  • Categorise formative events during life's journey affecting career choices and their relevancy to how you select methods of career support.
  • Discern where mainstream theories of career choice contribute to the effectiveness of your career counselling.

2. HAYD402 Assessment and Models of Client Management

This unit of study equips students with the knowledge and skills required to understand the many different types of career assessment tools available and to identify and choose the most appropriate to their client needs. Additionally, students study different client intervention models with the aim of adopting, adapting or developing their own model.

Generic Skills Outcome/Graduate Attributes:

  • Evaluate which instruments contribute to enhancing the interaction between career helper and client.
  • Distinguish from the range of instrument types (card sorts, computer-based, inventories, structured workbooks, assessments, tests, etc.) which combination is appropriate as aids to a range of client career problem-solving issues.
  • Determine the advantages and disadvantages of a range of client management models as a template for your relationship with clients.
  • Assess your competencies against those specified for career services delivery by national and international career associations.

The Careers Fast Track Career Counsellor Accreditation Program has been designed to provide career professionals with an effective and structured methodology to assist their clients to manage personal growth and career-life transition. This counts for a 25% exemption from the Graduate Certificate program.


3. HAYD403 Developing Helping Skills Skills

This unit of study canvasses the major theories and skill sets for effective career counselling to equip students with the knowledge and competencies required to perform as an effective career counsellor.

Generic Skills Outcome/Graduate Attributes:

  • Distinguish between four theories of counselling as a skilled helper
  • Identify the key counselling skills dealing with education transition, employment transition, career-life transition, enhancing employability or career enrichment.
  • Build the career coach-employee relationship in structured stages.
  • Develop questioning and active listening skills to facilitate employees self-search and maintain momentum through the new career-life exploration process.

4. HAYD404 Essentials of Transition Coaching 

This unit of study enables students to develop specific skills surrounding helping clients in career transition. Its focus is on particular knowledge and skill sets surrounding the pragmatic side of career transition (the resume and other documentation).

Generic Skills Outcome/Graduate Attributes:

  • Apply your new learning about the nature of transitions to your discussions with clients.
  • Train your clients in the practices of networking when experiencing a career transition.
  • Enhance your coaching effectiveness in job hunt advising by the use of self-test checklists, questionnaires and worksheets.
  • Format the style, content and design of several types of e-Resumes for e-transmission.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist clients to articulate and develop their unique value proposition
